Steelers QB alternatives

Writer's picture: John CruickshankJohn Cruickshank

This week I will be looking at some of the possibilities that I Believe the Steelers should be looking at off of the back of last week’s article. I will split these quarterbacks into three separate categories :

Aim for the stars, happy medium and long shot/depth piece

Aim for the stars

Kyler Murray – one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the league, he has at various points in his career played at an MVP level and yet the Cardinals never really seem truly settled with him at QB .Murray is one of the most electric players at the position and can rival anyone athletically. He has an absolute cannon of an arm and

has shown the ability to make do with lesser playmakers. I’m not sure if the Cardinals would move away from him and I don’t think they should right now but I feel the Steelers could make the phone call and what’s the worst that could happen ?

Anthony Richardson - A huge arm but with major accuracy issues that underpinned everything leading to his temporary demotion. Richardson is an unbelievable athlete at the position, almost a mix of Josh Allen’s power and tenacity crossed with Lamar’s speed and elusiveness. Make no mistake about it this would be a project if the

Steelers were to trade for him, He will be 24 by the time the season begins so plenty of time to potentially improve. I think this depends on the asking price but I wouldn’t be shocked if the Colts were happy to move on.

Brock Purdy - Now this is the longest shot of them all but I wonder how happy the 49ers are at making him one of the highest paid QB’s in the league. He has been good for the team but there is a certain group that believe any functional QB could thrive in Kyle Shanahan’s offence and to be fair there have certainly been things to

suggest this could be the case. So do San Francisco and Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch really want to let Purdy define the rest of their time in San Fran? .

Happy Medium

Sam Darnold/ JJ McCarthy - Sam Darnold has been unbelievable this year and don’t let the playoff ending leave a sour taste in your mouth. Darnold legitimately carried the Vikings team though for stretches of their season. despite this though he is unlikely to get a massive contract wherever he goes and is likely looking at somewhere around 30 mil a season according to reports which is very reasonable for a starting QB. If the Vikings decide to stick with Darnold then make the move for McCarthy who would according to most draft analysts be the highest rated QB if he had come out this year.

Derek Carr - With a new head coach coming in for the Saints it may be a good time to see if they would like to get out from under Carr’s contract. Carr is a divisive figure amongst fans in the league but the stark difference between the Saints with him and without him this year was clear for all to see. Similar to Wilson in that he throws a

beautiful deep ball although in Carr’s case he is a little more hesitant to let it rip. I view Carr as a rich man’s Russell Wilson but there is a chance to double him up with a draft pick or one of the long shots mentioned and I genuinely think the steelers could do a lot worse.

Daniel Jones - This will leave some people horrified and outside looking in I can see why. Jones had virtually no help though for his tenure as a the Giants QB and the one year he had something approaching adequate help and good coaching he took the team to the playoffs and won a game! . The media beat him down and he has become some what of a laughing stock in the league but with his tough running and good arm there is definitely talent there who has had success in the league and you don’t do that if you’re a bum frankly.

Long Shots

Drew Lock - This year Lock was dare I say it halfway good at times, he flashed some fine play for a plucky giants team down the stretch with his legs and powerful throws. Lock at one point was named as the bronco’s starter but fell down the depth chart but with a bit of maturity could he have found the right ingredients to become a star?

Joe Milton - The undrafted free agent who signed for the Patriots looked great at points against the Bills backups late in the season. One of his touchdown throws in particular was an absolute laser and in Milton’s limited snaps in his career he has showcased this at points while also having mobility and being an absolute unit at

QB.There has always been rumblings in Patriot circles about Milton maybe it’s time the Steelers took a gamble for a late round pick.
